My big issue with RT is that because it's not a standard and not integrated with the all the ways their are to Tweet, only a subsection of users do it, they only do it some of the time and they do it in different ways, so it becomes another piece of social media baggage. No matter how potentially valuable and useful, there is only so much baggage users can cope with.
I'm really a big fan of what Twitter has created, and I'm sure they have their priorities, but I am disappointed and increasingly frustrated that they haven't evolved the service in some of the ways they could have done that users are begging for. I'm sure it's not easy to run a company like that and I haven't the upmost respect for what they have achieved so far, but I do get frustrated at the missed potential and the lack of strong signs of change (=decrease in hope). My sensors are out for the next service that can capture a critical mass - which is of course the 'killer functionality' of any service of this kind.
A nice idea would be to have a RT button directly on Twitter (and the API) that would let you both retweet but also look for what's hot in your network (what has been the most retweeted, which would mean an interesting story for you if you built your network correctly).
We should see search ads next week, a first step towards monetization (brands would be better represented), a sign that Twitter is moving ahead.
Note that ads have been tested in Japan, along with grouping (Twicco).
